Visiting, with the late poet Guy Butler, Olive Schreiner’s grave on Buffelskop, Cradock, South Africa, 1993. By strange coincidence I spent fourteen of my childhood years on a farm 2 kilometres from this stone sarcophagus. The farm workers used to refer to the grave as the place, “where Olaf Schneider, that strange man, lies buried with his dog”. Ironically, Schreiner, the author of The Story of an African Farm, was one of South Africa’s early feminists.
