- University of Cape Town -

As Hofmeyr Professor in the School of Languages and Literatures at the University of Cape Town, Etienne van Heerden mostly deals with postgraduate students.

His research interests in literature include literary theory, Afrikaans prose since the early eighties and specific areas such as Historiography and Fiction, Postmodernism and Engagement and Afrikaans and Dutch literature from South Africa and the former Dutch colonies in the Caribbean and the East.

He also teaches Internet and Web theory.

His supervisorship of Creative Writing master classes has led to several of his students publishing their supervised work with leading South African publishers. Some of these books include the novels and short story collections by writers Sonja Loots, Tom Dreyer, Nini Bennet, Jaco Botha, Rachelle Greeff, Izak de Vries and others. These are the leading writers of the younger generation.

Recently, Van Heerden challenged his students to create two “unconventional” love stories each. The result was the collection Die mooiste liefde is verby (Tafelberg Publishers).

With Die Rooi Roman Van Heerden created an interactive novel on the Web with the aid of his students and other writers. This collective effort - a first for Afrikaans - was eventually published in book form by Human and Rousseau Publishers. It was co-edited by senior student and now well established short story writer, Jaco Botha.

Young authors whose manuscripts were supervised by Etienne van Heerden and subsequently published in book form include:
